Upgrading existing building stock is an important way to address the carbon, energy efficiency, and sustainability goals embraced by the AEC industry. However existing buildings are really only now being talked about. While masonry buildings can present some unique challenges to retrofit, they are also some of the most beautiful, durable buildings around. There are many good examples of successful renovations, including three featured in the first article linked below. I've also been fortunate enough to have heard several presentations from experienced designers that share tips and tricks for making these renovations successful. Do you have tips or case studies on masonry buildings to share? 3 historic LEED buildings that continue the tradition of learning
All kinds of buildings and spaces enhance their energy efficiency, indoor air quality and other sustainable features through LEED certification—and historic buildings are no exception. The value of our community places, and the history associated with them, goes beyond the aesthetic appeal of preserving architecturally significant structures. Historic buildings represent continuity, the importance of knowing where we came from, as we move into the future. These three LEED projects show how we can support places with historic or cultural value, while making them healthy and efficient spaces in which to work and learn. Each of these green buildings promotes education and provides resources for the community.

The buildings sector has accounted for 66 percent of the total decrease in energy-related U.S. CO₂ emissions. Much of the decrease is attribute to the electric power sector’s decrease in carbon intensity of generation as well as increased energy performance of our building stock according to this blog.

How do we integrate proven materials like masonry into the bigger spectrum of what we are trying to accomplish in resilient construction? In this new podcast from the Masonry Institute of Michigan and the Upstate Masonry Institute titled Masonry Principles, Jason Thompson of NCMA dives into answering this question and how masonry accomplishes a more resilient footprint. The podcast is aimed at construction professionals to give them the tools they need to build better buildings with masonry.

Firm designs dorm with hollow concrete block
Zero Energy Design Lab has designed a girls' dormitory with hollow concrete block for the St. Andrews Institute of Technology and Management in Gurugram, India. "The building unfolds as a series of multidimensional spaces, arranged in a hierarchical order through the method of adaptive layering," said Sachin Rastogi, founder of the Zero Energy Design Lab in this article
Progress made on carbon-capture project in Canada
A Lafarge Canada cement facility in Richmond, British Columbia, now has the ability to capture and filter carbon dioxide from flue gas. The company, along with Svante and Total, have completed the second phase of a project to develop the world's first full-cycle solution to capture and reuse C02 from a cement plant. Read more here.

Mark your calendars for the next in our Masonry Night School series: Strength Design of Masonry. Richard M. Bennett and John M. Hochwalt, authors of TMS's newest and best-selling new guide Strength Design of Masonry, will present a six-session Strength Design of Masonry Night School beginning February 3, 2021. This course covers topics such as the design of beams and walls (for in-plane and out-of-plane loads), seismic detailing, and design of connectors. It will provide in-depth instruction for anyone interested in designing more efficient masonry structures using strength design of masonry.
