MN Concrete Forum (11/14) - Dense, Energy-Efficient, Affordable Housing

MCC is sponsoring a presentation titled "Dense, Energy-Efficient, Affordable Housing" at the AIA Minnesota Convention next week.  The program, which will be presented by Mark Ginsberg, FAIA, LEEDAP (Curtis + Ginsberg Architects LLP), has SOLD OUT at the AIA Convention!!!  It's been so popular that AIA Minnesota has asked permission to video the presentation and offer it (for a fee) as a webinar in the future.

MCC members and their guests have the unique opportunity to hear a portion of that presentation LIVE at a MN Concrete Forum on November 14 when Mark Ginsberg joins us in a relaxed, informal setting.  A detailed description of the presentation can be found at the bottom of this email.  The presentation at the MN Concrete Forum has been approved for 1.0 AIA LU/HSW.  Certificates of attendance for one hour will also be made available to all attendees.

New York City is the densest City in the US and because of its Density the lowest carbon footprint per capita of any city in the US. We need to increase density in cities to house a growing population in a low carbon manner. What have we learned, and why it’s critical to meet 80 percent carbon reduction by 2050, through designing dense urban housing, is critical.

The presentation will show eight examples (Four complete at the time of the Presentation) of affordable Passive House (PH) projects including the largest PH project in North America. Design and construction issues will be discussed. We will also discuss a new concept in Family Shelter design to show other low carbon footprint solutions to additional housing issues.

The presentation will cover design limitations and opportunities, and issues with PH certification. Strategic design systems discussed will include: envelope - insulated concrete forms, Air Vapor barrier detailing, windows; ERV centralized vs unitized; VRF systems and alternatives.
