Minnesota Concrete Council Becomes Chapter of the American Concrete Institute

The Minnesota Concrete Council (MCC) has recently been established as an American Concrete Institute (ACI) Chapter.  Becoming an ACI Chapter will provide MCC with additional resources from which to offer more technical based education programs in addition to its current non-ACI programming.  MCC is excited to add participation in ACI Chapter events to the lists of other benefits offered to its members.

Current MCC Treasurer and Education Committee Co-Chair Josh Edwards, PE (AVR, Inc & Affiliates) expressed his support of MCC becoming a Chapter of ACI when he said “It’s only fitting that as MCC celebrates its 30th Anniversary that we expand and partner with ACI to provide even more education on concrete design, construction and materials to construction professionals who share our commitment to pursuing the best use of concrete in Minnesota.”

“The American Concrete Institute’s chapters are the face of the Institute in communities and countries across the globe,” states Ronald G. Burg, Executive Vice President, American Concrete Institute. “ACI welcomes the Minnesota Concrete Council as its newest chapter, and looks forward to working with them to provide the best concrete resources to their members.”

The Minnesota Concrete Council Chapter of ACI has already planned four “Tech Talk Tuesdays” for 2019 with the first being scheduled for April 2. Minnesota Concrete Council ACI Chapter - Tech Talk Tuesday
You are cordially invited to the inaugural event of the new Minnesota Concrete Council ACI Chapter that will be held Tuesday, April 2 over lunch at Midland Hills Country Club in Roseville, MN.  The presenter will be Cathy French, Ph.D., P.E. (University of Minnesota)

The American Concrete Institute expects to publish “ACI 318-19: Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete,” in 2019. The new edition will be the first since the reorganized format was published in 2014 and will include new and updated code provisions along with updated color illustrations for clarity.

ACI expects 318-19 to include new code provisions on topics including transverse reinforcement and shear in wide beams, hanger reinforcement, bi-directional interaction of one-way shear, and reference to ACI certifications. Existing provisions expected to receive significant updates and clarifications include two-way shear strength, ordinary walls, seismic loads, reinforcement detailing, analysis, and numerous materials requirements. Analysis methods for two-way slabs and provisions on shearheads and composite concrete columns are expected to be removed.

Specifically, in this presentation, Dr. French will provide more in-depth information on ACI 318-19 updates including the introduction of high strength reinforcement, new shear provisions for non-prestressed concrete, and the introduction of screw anchors and shear lugs. French will highlight some of the background behind the new code provisions. This presentation will be of general interest to structural engineers who design reinforced concrete systems.

Registration will open at 11:30 am.  A buffet lunch will be served beginning at noon.  The presentation will begin at 12:30 pm and will conclude by 1:30 pm.

Cost to attend is $25 if registered before March 26.  Registrations made after March 26 will cost $35.  YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE A MEMBER OF EITHER MCC OR THE NEW ACI CHAPTER TO ATTEND TECH TALK TUESDAY!  Attendees will receive a certificate of attendance for one professional development hour.
