Minnesota Concrete Council - Upcoming Continuing Education Programs and Events

January 19, 2017 Breakfast Meeting (Co-Hosted by AGC of Minnesota)
"OSHA's New Crystalline Silica Rule: Are You Ready?" - Adele Abrams, Esq., CMSP - Law Office of Adele L. Abrams P.C.

OSHA has finalized new exposure limits for crystalline silica in construction, maritime and general industry and the first compliance deadline is around the corner (June 23, 2017). Despite litigation challenging the rule and the recent federal elections, implementation has not been stayed and the standards will require major changes in management of respirable silica in the concrete industry’s workplaces. This presentation will discuss the development of the rules for each sector, OSHA’s health effects findings and implications for tort and workers compensation claims, the specific requirements in each of the standards for exposure monitoring and medical surveillance, engineering and work practice controls, what training must be provided to employees, temporary workers and subcontractors (and by whom), how to develop a written exposure control plan and occupational health program, and more. The interface of this rule with OSHA’s respiratory protection requirements will also be addressed, as well as prospects for an analogous rulemaking by the Mine Safety & Health Administration.

MCC and MNSEA to Host Younger Member WhirlyBall Event
This networking event is being co-hosted by the Minnesota Concrete Council (MCC) and the Younger Members Group of the Minnesota Structural Engineers Association (MNSEA). The event is intended for younger members of both associations who are looking for opportunities to learn more about the construction industry via networking with other young professionals in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. (If you're wondering if you qualify as a "younger member," please contact Margaret Mills.)  This is the first in what is hoped to be many future networking and continuing education partnership opportunities between the two groups.

So, what the heck is WhirlyBall?!? WhirlyBall is an extremely fun “sport” that combines basketball, hockey, lacrosse, and bumper-cars. That’s right, bumper-cars. In WhirlyBall, two teams of 5 players use scoops to try to toss a ball through elevated backboards at opposite ends of an enclosed court (roughly the size of a basketball court) while driving specially designed bumper-cars.

When: Wednesday, February 1, 2017
Where: WhirlyBall Twin Cities - 13644 80th Circle North, Maple Grove, MN 55369
Time: 4:00 - 7:00 pm
Cost: Registration fee is $15 per person and includes WhirlyBall court time, food and great fun!
