April 26 MN Concrete Forum: Natural Pozzolans
With the closure of numerous coal-fired power plants in the U.S., causing a reduction of available fly ash for concrete, the use of other supplementary cementitious materials (SCM’s) are becoming more prevalent. 3M is mining a Natural Pozzolan in Wausau, WI for use in concrete. 3M’s Natural Pozzolan is a fine grade cement replacement that provides ASR mitigation and improved overall strength and durability.

John Edwards (3M Industrial Mineral Products Division) will provide a technical presentation on the use of the 3M Natural Pozzolan, NP-100W in slip-form paving and other ready mix applications in the Midwest.

Attendees will be emailed a certificate of attendance for one professional development hour (PDH) at the conclusion of the event.

There is no charge to attend this event but pre-registration is required because space is limited.

When: Thursday, April 26
Registration: 9:30 am. Presentation: 10:00 am. Q&A: 11:00 am.

May 17 Breakfast Meeting
"The Best Thing Since Water-Cement Ratio" will be presented by Jeff Speck, FACI (Trinity Lightweight). Internal curing may be the best thing to happen to concrete since we discovered the importance of the water-cement ratio. Internal curing using lightweight aggregate has been around for more than 20 years, so why isn’t it used more? This presentation will cover the principals of internal curing as well as the many benefits. It will also cover some information on specifying lightweight aggregate for internal curing in addition to some case studies from across the United States.

The event will be held Thursday, May 17 at Midland Hills Country Club. Registration opens at 7:00 am. A full hot breakfast buffet will be served beginning at 7:15 am. The presentation will begin at 8:00 am and will conclude by 9:00 am.

SAVE THE DATE!  June 21 Breakfast Meeting
MCC will be hosting an extended TWO HOUR presentation on June 21.  Concrete is the clear material of choice for constructing buildings that are strong, safe and durable. Ironically, the use of concrete in the construction of low to mid-rise structures has been declining and has been replaced with weaker, less resilient construction materials and methods that put occupants, owners, contractors, designers and first responders at risk. The purpose of this seminar is to illustrate how these construction materials and methods stack up against concrete in terms of durability and safety. Our end goal is for the concrete industry to be able to fully inform potential owners and decision makers that when they build with concrete these risks are greatly reduced or eliminated.

John Lee (Cemstone) will give a short presentation on the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association's Build with Strength campaign.  Derek Hodgin (Construction Science & Engineering, Inc) will present "Understanding the Challenges of Mid-Rise Wood Frame Construction" and Jon Narva (Narva Associates) will present "Let's Build for Safety."  Registration will open soon!

Post-Tensioning Institute (PTI) 2018 Convention
Hundreds of engineers, contractors, and DOT professionals will gather at the Hilton in Minneapolis, May 6-9, for the annual PTI Convention. The event includes dozens of technical committee meetings, during which attendees work on in-progress specifications and standards, a technical session program sure to educate and inspire, an awards program to recognize those making the biggest impacts on the post-tensioning industry, a lively exhibit hall, and networking/social events.
