MC&MCA Golf Outing Recap

In an attempt to feel normal in this abnormal year, we held the 2020 golf outing at Keller Golf Course on Wednesday, August 26 in Maplewood, MN. The event started at 12:30 with 84 golfers, 18 hole sponsors, and 1 retired Gary Botzek who greeted the players and several volunteers in attendance. The scoring was low, so I guess we have some members hitting the links during their downtime this year. We ended up with a three-team tie at 58 (-14) and needed a scorecard playoff to crown our 2020 winners.

  • 1st place team – County Materials
    • Dale Buker, Bret Minger, Greg Johnson & Josh Thorson
  • 2nd place team – Northland Concrete & Masonry
    • Joel Hempel, Justin Johnson, Ted Beckman & Kirt O’Konek
  • 3rd place team – Alex Brick & Stone
    • Neil Jenzen, Clay Hager, Corey Johnson & Mason Johnson

We ended up with two skins going to the teams from Metro Brick/Gresser Co. & LIUNA/MN LECET.

2021 MC&MCA Excellence Contest

After extensive discussions, our committee has decided that this year’s contest will be judged solely from photographs and plans. It was felt it was too much to ask a couple of judges to spend 6-8 hours in a car with two of our volunteers judging. This year’s contest will open Sept 15 and all entries need to be submitted no later than Thursday Oct 15. Watch our website for entry forms and new rules. We have been in discussions with the Masonry Institute of Iowa, which has a very successful awards program that is always judged via photographs. They have been very helpful in sharing their rules which have been updated from year to year to help improve their program. Judging will follow sometime in October. The committee hopes you embrace this change and enter a number of projects.

NCMA's Masonry Checkoff Update

The progress of the Concrete Masonry Products Research, Education and Promotion Order is gaining speed and just passed into the next step of its approval process. On August 24, the Department of Commerce posted the draft order in the Federal Register where it will be open to public comment for 45 days. Anyone who would like to make comments on this draft will have until Oct 8 to do so.  If you would like to read this draft order you can click here, where you will find a copy of the 19-page document outlining the rules of this program. Due to any unforeseen issues the NCMA feels this program will be put out to their membership for voting around the first of the year.
