Maple Grove Middle School Concrete & Masonry Construction Career Day

The November 7 event was a huge success! Around 80 students from Maple Grove Middle School Tech. Ed. classes were bussed over to the BAC Training Center in New Hope and were treated to a 5-hour introduction to concrete and masonry construction—including actual “hands on” and “hands in” the mud! The MC&MCA led the organizational effort but were strongly assisted by the bricklayers, cement finishers, operating engineers and laborers apprenticeship programs.

Special thanks to John Slama, Masonry Coordinator at the BAC Training Center and Jody Paulson, Director of Recruiting and Administration at the Center for their hard work in organizing the “home field advantage” of the adventure!

The classroom introduction featured technology and career paths for the kids, followed by a “hands-on” portion that featured 10 “experience stations” that included bricklaying and concrete finishing procedures with bricklayers, cement finishers, laborer apprentices and teachers assisting the young people! Every 10-20 minutes the small groups moved to a new station and experience. The kids, equipped in safety glasses and gloves donated by Construction Midwest, Inc. were treated to pizza and beverages over lunch and received take home gifts from the experience. MC&MCA hired a video company that caught much of the action. Copies of the finished product will be shared with the school, the unions, and will be posted on our website and social network. We received financial and material donations from members to defray the cost of the event. Companies that contributed money and/or materials included: CMI, American Engineering Testing, Donald R. Frantz Concrete Construction, Kiffmeyer Inc., Metro Brick Inc., North Country Concrete, PCL Construction Services, Scaffold Service Inc., and The Builders Group.

Using the video and the effort, the MC&MCA hopes to market the experience to other schools in the next school year.
