2018.09.06 - Image AGC-Autodesk survey: Labor shortage has industry at a 'tipping point'

The much-publicized labor shortage isn’t set to ease anytime soon, according to a newly released survey conducted jointly by the Associated General Contractors of America and Autodesk. A full 80% of the 2,500 respondents indicated they are having a tough time filling hourly craft positions, and around the same percentages hold true region by region. Fifty-six percent of firms reported difficulties filling salary positions. In addition, 81% of firms responded it will continue to be hard — or even get harder — to find craft workers in the short term, especially given the growing demand for construction workers. From July 2017 to July 2018, construction employment expanded in 281 out of the 358 metro areas AGC tracks. Read more.

Increases in population, urbanization, and changes in climate have placed increasing numbers of the US population into areas that are subjected to higher and more damaging winds. This increase in risk has prompted a response by the building codes. In fact, the 2015 edition of the International Building Code (IBC) now requires that most schools and emergency facilities located in a significant portion of the Central US contain tornado shelters. In recognition of the fact that many of the schools and emergency facilities have, and continue to be constructed using masonry, a study of how masonry walls can be used to provide safe, practical and cost effective solutions for sheltering from tornados and high wind events was conducted. Masonry walls can be used to provide safe, practical and cost effective solutions for sheltering from tornados and high wind events. Read more.

Five questions with Johnny Fizzano, Fizzano Brothers Concrete Products

2018.09.06 - Johnny Fizzano

Name: Johnny Fizzano
Title: Vice President
Company: Fizzano Brothers Concrete Products
City/State: Philadelphia, Pa

How did you get into the industry? My Pop-Pop John T Fizzano (NCMA Hall of Fame 1996) started the company with his brothers in 1935. My first day on the job was in 1988, there may or may not be laws against this these days. In 1998 I started my full-time career.

What is your favorite part of your job? We are still family owned and our employees can see, feel and respect that aspect of our company. I also love the ability to jump on a forklift once in a while and forget the everyday grind.

What is the best advice you ever got (work or personal)? Best advice I received was in high school from an anonymous teacher. “Your smile will get you far but won’t get you everywhere”

What do you do when you are not at work? When not working I enjoy playing Men’s league “over 40” (YPG’ers) ice hockey late at night and watching Philly sports with family and friends. I also enjoy when my wife Danielle and I can sit back and watch our daughters Isabella and Ava play sports. Once in a while you may hear my voice echoing across the fields.

Favorite Movie? I’m going to break that rule and go with 2. Tombstone and Green Street Hooligans
