Code Change Update

John Pederson of TCC Materials met with the MC&MCA Board of Directors at our April meeting and briefed the board and provided the next three newsletter items.

Earlier this year the concrete block producers, associate members of the MC&MCA, faced a proposed code change that was taken off the table after the Department of Labor and the Head Building Official for the state were questioned in one the MN Senate Jobs & Economic Development Committee Hearings chaired by Senator Eric Pratt (Prior Lake). The proposed change would have added vertical reinforcing requirement to cantilevered walls (shallow 5-course basements) in residential basement construction, where it is not required now. Currently, there are over 1000 homes built each year with this type of foundation. This code change would have added +/-$2500 of cost to the foundation. The MC&MCA Board had voted to help fund independent engineering, however the funding was not needed. The Board of Directors supported this work in part because if concrete block foundations are lost, the cost to produce concrete block for commercial projects would most certainly rise.
