I like to watch DIY home shows like This Old House and Holmes on Homes. I like Mike Holmes motto: “If you're going to do something, do it right the first time”. I like this thought and it is so true when looking at masonry flashing and how it is installed because to fix this is usually a laborious task, costing lots of dollars. When reviewing technical calls to the Masonry Advisory Council in the past year, masonry flashing installation questions are the most visited topic.

Masonry wall construction consists of an assembly of several parts - concrete masonry units (CMU), mortar, grout, etc. Based on design requirements, steel reinforcement may or may not be included within the wall. For either situation, continuity of the masonry wall is recommended to tie the full masonry structure together.

V&A Dundee - Kengo Kuma & Associates

The form of the museum is inspired by the cliffs on Scotland’s north-eastern coastline, with the cladding – dramatic lines of pre-cast concrete that run horizontally around the curving concrete walls – creating patterns of shadows which change with the weather and the time of day. V&A Dundee’s appearance is of two inverted pyramids which are separate at ground floor, and then twist to connect at the upper galleries floor.
