When someone says “French Lick,” it doesn’t necessarily make you think of a beautiful and historic resort in rural Indiana unless you are a Larry Bird fan, of course. But in the quaint city of French Lick, Indiana there is a beautiful resort with tons of history and many sights to see. Once known as the French Lick Springs Hotel, the direct rival of the neighboring city, West Baden, Indiana. French Lick and West Baden are only five minutes from each other, they are so close you could miss the city limits. In this installation of our American Treasures series, we are taking you on a trip through the French Lick Resort, which is made up of two large hotels.

The Influences On The Color Of Mortar

 

Using iron oxide pigments to color mortar has been in use for over 100 years. The ability of a small amount of pigment to change the color of several cubic feet of mortar is a testimony to the ingenuity of man. The primary type of color pigment used to color mortar is iron oxides. Iron Oxide pigments can be mined and pulverized (natural) or processed from recycled scrap iron or nitrobenzene with metallic iron (synthetic). These processes produce pigments that meet ASTM-C979 the Standard for pigments to be used in Integrally Colored Concrete.

Work / Life Balance: Staying Balanced

 

Work-life balance…. Sounds like something we could easily write about, right? As I sit down to put this article together, we are coming back from the Memorial holiday weekend. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect backdrop to be the foundation for this article. Evenings and weekends are the balance to this masonry scale we overload each day. Please don’t get me wrong, I love this business and the industry as a whole. But it will make you old, quickly if you don’t strive to have a work/life balance.

Man, oh man, it is Monday, gonna’ be a good week. On my way to work, I go through all of the major tasks I want to accomplish this week. What I did over the weekend will prepare me for the problems that were not estimated as a task that will arise. I set up my truck to keep me going: I purchased a fire extinguisher, mounted it into the floorboard of my truck. I put an extra water hose in the bed of the truck under the toolbox so it would not get cut with by other items I haul. I grabbed a hose repair kit, nozzle washer, and a spray nozzle and put them in the toolbox. Nozzles tend to drip or break at the absolute worst times.
