This session will focus on understanding the rationale and methodology for condition assessment and the repair and restoration of historic stone masonry buildings. The program will provide insight into common types of deterioration and material behavior along with specific intervention and repair methods and materials as well as methods for cleaning historic masonry. This presentation will also go into case studies including the 30th Street Station in Philadelphia, PA and the MN State Capital restoration project. Hands on stations will allow for designers to physically apply mortar to bricks and apply stone patching material to stone with help of masons to further develop their understanding of the skill and craft involved.
